We failed at our first assignment. We did the process right. We collected the data. We generated the results. We communicated to management. We were grossly ineffective. We failed to convince a then big, cash-rich company that their development process was out of control. Worse, so was their cash flow. Worse yet-there was this pesky little competitor out there that ought to be purchased-now! The company was Ashton Tate (dBase III). Remember them?

That failure stung. From that point we stopped being politically correct. We became effective.
